Dev Fiction: Juniors and the Reality of a Development Team

“We’re looking for an enthusiastic junior developer who already knows everything—or, ideally, can learn it right away”—we often read between the lines in job postings. But is it realistic to be enthusiastic 8 hours a day, 5 days a week? And how many certifications, diplomas, tutorials, courses, workshops, and sample projects should such a junior actually have in their portfolio?
Starting your first IT job is shrouded in many myths and expectations—both from the junior developer and from the team they’re joining. Using examples and stories from dev, we’ll explore what communication strategies to choose as a dev newbie to succeed (and not go crazy), how to systematically educate yourself despite all the work stress, and, last but not least, how to enjoy the ride.
Let’s take a look at the daily hustle and bustle of dev through the eyes of a history graduate who no longer wanted to deal with the past and has now been working as a front-end developer for two years.
